(from Michal Bajcsy)
Here is the degaussing procedure I got from Dave Phillips when I borrowed the machine from CFA (it took me a little while to find my old notebook):
1) Turn on the primary variac, set voltage to 0.
2) Hook up the clamps of the battery cable to a wire/pipe running through the shields (make sure there is no contact between the shields and the wire) 3) Turn the primary variac all the way up and then all the way down 3 times in ~15s cycles (one should get about 150-300A running through the wire)
4) Repeat 3. with current going up to only ~20A. It is easy to accopmish trhat by inserting a relatively thin wire b/w jumber cable and copper tube (Irina) 5) Set the primary variac to 0 volts and unhook the battery cable from the shields.
6) Pull the primary variac out of the outlet.
